Pittsburgh Glass Center Call for Glass Artists by January!

Just got news directly from the Pittsburgh Glass Center:
CALL FOR GLASS ARTISTS
GROUP EXHIBITION AT PGC IN 2010
"FROM THE EARTH TO THE FIRE AND BACK"

In honor of Pittsburgh being selected as the North American host city for World Environment Day 2010, Pittsburgh Glass Center is planning a juried group exhibition called "From the Earth to the Fire and Back" for March-June 2010. We invite you to submit an application for the exhibition.

We will be connecting the exhibition to the theme for World Environment Day, which is "Biodiversity - Reconnecting With Nature." All of the artwork for the exhibition must use glass to address an environmental issue and participating artists must live within 150 miles of Pittsburgh. Artists can use the World Environment Day theme as inspiration for their work, use recycled glass or other elements, work with found objects or come up with another environmental theme of their choosing to qualify for the exhibition.

World Environment Day is designed to:

* give a human face to environmental issues;

* empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development;

* promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes
towards environmental issues; and

* advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and
more prosperous future.

Artists submitting applications are encouraged, but not required, to take these goals into consideration when conceptualizing their work.

The jury will be looking for artwork that expresses an environmental concept or idea OR uses environmentally friendly materials and processes. Additional considerations include:

* Concept - Does the work start a compelling dialog about the environment?

* Creativity - Does the work use glass in a new way?

* Excellence in Execution - Is the artwork well-crafted and does it raise the standards of excellence in the field?

How to apply:

Send your completed application form which can be downloaded from the PGC Web site and also attach either an image representative of the work you plan to create or a detailed drawing of your proposed work by January 8, 2010 to:

Heather McElwee
Pittsburgh Glass Center

Pittsburgh, PA 15206
