Jozef van Wissem

From Pittsburgh Cultural Trust:
Hailing from the Netherlands, Jozef van Wissem is a minimalist composer and performer on the Renaissance and Baroque lute. Much of his work is based on mirror images and palindromes - writing out and inverting classical lute tablature pieces. He adds his own themes and accents, then applies the "cut-up" technique of William S. Burroughs to shift and mix the parts together to create new works. He also combines the lute with electronic sound modifications. Van Wissem has collaborated with guitarists such as Gary Lucas (of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band), James Blackshaw (from the UK), and improvisor Tetuzi Akiyama from Japan. He has released a dozen CDs in the past decade, including the most recent "The Garden of Forking Paths" on Important Records (whose roster includes Merzbow, Christina Kubisch, Anthony Braxton, Pauline Oliveros and Andrea Parkins).
Takes place at the Wood Street Galleries on May 15 at 7:30!
