Accordion Pool Party is multi-ethnic music and dance festival developed over the past year by Deborah Knox and me (Susan Englert), with inspiration by Pittsburgh performance artist Steven Pellegrino. It's a quirky spectacle of culture and community pride. The one-day event is also a catalyst for a more lasting civic endeavor, Pool Planning Workshops to involve residents in shaping the future of the Leslie Park Pool site. This takes place at the Leslie Park Pool! And just for good measure, an image of DJ Zombo!
Accordion Pool Party involves about 20 seasoned Pittsburgh accordionists and costumed folk dancers performing in the empty pool a mix of genres including Cajun, tango, polka, French, Israeli and Balkan music. Special guest Guinea West African Drum and Dance Ensemble will open the program. The event should appeal to all ages, to Babushkas, hipsters and residents from a cross-section of Pittsburgh neighborhoods. Sit and savor the spectacle poolside, then step into the pool for a finale smorgasbord world dance party!
Emcee for the event is Lawrenceville DJ & Zombo Gallery Owner Michael Devine. The afternoon also features light fare for sale by Lawrenceville's eclectic cafes. There'll be chalk drawing for the kids, and itinerant portrait shoots throughout the afternoon (grab an accordion + some props and strike a pose!) by Philly photographer Tsirkus Fotografika.
Accordion Pool Party is a catalyst for a series of community workshops supported by District 7 Councilman Patrick Dowd's office and Pittsburgh City Parks to reimagine life for a beloved neighborhood asset. The facilitated info exchange and brainstorming sessions will take part in early Fall.
Accordion Pool Party is supported in part by a Seed Grant from the Sprout Fund and by a grant from the Lawrenceville Corporation's Mainstreets Community Event Microgrant Program.
