Artist Tim Kaulen, 43, center, works on his steel sculpture, now titled "One Tin Duck," with assistants Marcus Rettig, left, and Ashlan Luft, in his old steel mill studio in Hazelwood.
Kaulen of Polish Hill is the 2009 Pittsburgh Center for the Arts "Artist of the Year," with his exhibition opening Sept. 25. For 20 years he has been using reclaimed materials to create whimsical, oversized sculptures. His latest work will "pay homage to classic American tin and wooden toys from the turn of the century," Kaulen says.
